Why Staying Hydrated Is So Important in Hot Weather

Staying hydrated in hot weather is important because your body loses water through sweat as it works to keep you cool. If those fluids aren't replaced, dehydration can contribute to fatigue, headache, dizziness and other symptoms and can increase the risk of heat-related illness. Drinking water regularly—before you become very thirsty—is one of the simplest ways to protect yourself in extreme heat.

When the temperature climbs, reaching for a cold bottle of water isn't just refreshing.

It's one of the most important things you can do for your body.

Whether you're working outside, exercising, gardening, traveling, spending the day at the beach or simply running errands on a scorching summer afternoon, hot weather can cause your body to lose fluids faster than you may realize.

And here's the important part: don't wait until you're extremely thirsty to start drinking.

NIOSH (The National Institute for Occupational Health & Safety) recommends drinking before you feel thirsty when working in the heat because thirst can lag behind your body's need for fluid.

Why Does Hot Weather Make Hydration So Important?

Your body has its own cooling system: sweat.

As your body heats up, sweating helps release heat.

But when you sweat, you're also losing water.

If you don't replace those fluids, dehydration can develop.

That's why hydration becomes increasingly important during periods of high heat—especially if you're active or spending extended periods outdoors.

The CDC recommends drinking plenty of non-alcoholic fluids, planning strenuous outdoor activities for cooler portions of the day and taking frequent breaks in the shade.

Don't Wait Until You're Thirsty

It's easy to think:

"I'll drink something when I get thirsty."

In really hot weather, that's not necessarily the best strategy.

For people working in hot conditions, NIOSH recommends about one cup of water every 15–20 minutes, rather than waiting for thirst to kick in.

Your individual needs will vary depending on the heat, your activity level and your health.

You don't need to turn hydration into another complicated wellness routine.

Sometimes the easiest strategy is simply keeping water within reach.

Put bottles in the refrigerator.

Take one in the car.

Bring water on your walk.

Keep some beside you while you're working outside.

Pack plenty for the beach, pool, park or ball field.

Make hydration convenient, and you're more likely to do it.

Watch for Signs of Heat-Related Illness

Extreme heat deserves to be taken seriously.

Heavy sweating, headache, dizziness, nausea, weakness, muscle cramps and fainting can be signs of heat exhaustion.

Confusion, loss of consciousness and very high body temperature can signal heat stroke, which is a medical emergency.

Water isn't a substitute for medical attention when someone is experiencing serious heat illness.

If heat stroke is suspected, seek emergency medical help immediately.
